Pilots in WW1

World War 1 was the first time in history where airplanes were used in large scale battles. The technology was rapidly advancing and a lot of pilots could not keep up. But, who were the pilots who could?

Eddie Rickenbacker

Born on October 8th, 1890 in Columbus Ohio, Rickenbacker was the United State's top flying ace. He was reported to have 26 arial victories he was "considered to have received the most awards for valor by an american during the war"  ( Wikipedia ). He died July 23, 1973 in Zürich, Switzerland

René Fonck

Born on March 27th, 1894 in Saulcy-sur-Meurthe, Fonck was the "all-time Allied Ace of Aces". He was confirmed to have 75 arial victories out of 142 claims victories and was the entente's top fighter ace. He died in Paris, France on the 18th of June at the age of 59.

Manfred von Richthofen; the Red Baron

Born into an aristocratic family on May 2nd, 1892 in Wroclaw, Poland, Richthofen was deemed the "Red Baron" as he was the top fighter ace of the war and the "aces of aces". He was confirmed to have 80 arial victories and was shot down and killed near Vaux-sur-Somme, France on the 21st of April, 1918.
